Seed production in 2009

There are two ways that farmers can participate in the production of seed of the modified oil varieties.

  1. License the varieties from the Iowa State University Research Foundation and produce seed on your own.
Advantage: You get to decide to whom you will sell the harvested seed and at what price.
Disadvantages: You will be responsible for all aspects of seed production, including applying for seed certification, cleaning and bagging the seed, and marketing it. The Iowa Crop Improvement Association has more information on this process.

There will not be any guarantee of a premium for the seed.

  2. Grow the varieties under contract with a seed company.
Advantage: You will know in advance the premium you will receive for the seed you harvest.

You will not be responsible for applying for seed certification, cleaning and bagging the seed, and marketing it.

Disadvantage: You do not get to decide to whom you will sell the harvested seed and at what price.
